Train Tuesday 7 2 24 Introducing the new Athearn Genesis EMD SD50 in HO
EMD introduced the new 3,500 horsepower SD50 in May of 1981 as part of their planned “50 Series”. The SD50 was, in essence, a transition model of the 1970s era Dash 2 series of locomotive. The microprocessor-equipped SD60 and SD70 would continue through the end of the 1980s and into the 1990s.
The SD50 was originally produced by EMD as an immediate response to General Electric’s Dash 7 line of locomotives, which were becoming more
favorable with current roads--providing more competition for EMD. While EMD’s current SD40-2 model provided a reliable locomotive for most class 1 railroads at the time, GE Transportation was gaining more inroads with the 3,600hp Dash 7s. The Dash 7s boasted more modern technology and GE Transportation was providing competitive financing and maintenance programs to assist purchasers of their offerings. While EMD’s SD45 and SD45-2s with their 3,600 horsepower- were successful, the large 20-cylinder engines were not fuel-efficient. This lack of efficiency- alongside reported issues of early reliability-caused many railroads to rethink their motive power support. This was further magnified in the 1970s when the fuel crisis impacted general transportation as well as the railroad industry.
In May of 1981, EMD unveiled the new SD50 which would feature an updated version of the V16 645 from the venerable SD40-2, upgraded to 3,500hp at 900rpm. The SD50 had a longer frame and much longer long hood than its predecessors. Other improvements came in the way of moving the dynamic brake resistors for the dynamic brake grid from the traditional location above the prime mover to a cooler temperature location in front of the engine compartment air intakes, closer to the electrical switchgear. This, in turn, separated them from other systems, resulting in simplified maintenance for both the prime mover as well as the electrical system.
In all, nine class 1 and one international railroad ordered the EMD SD50 including; Baltimore and Ohio (Chessie System), 20 unit numbers 8576
- 8595; Chicago & Northwestern, 35 unit numbers 7000 - 7034; Chesapeake & Ohio (Chessie System), 43 unit numbers 8553 - 8575 and 8624 - 8643; Conrail, 135 unit numbers 6700 - 6834; Denver & Rio Grande Western, 17 unit number 5501 - 5517; Kansas City Southern, 10 unit numbers 704 - 713; Missouri Pacific, 60 unit numbers 5000 - 5059; Seaboard System, 81 unit numbers 8500 - 8552 and 8596 - 8623; Norfolk Southern, 20 unit numbers 6506 - 6525 and 5 units were built for export to Australia for the Hamersly Iron railroad. A grand total of 426 units were produced when production ceased in Feb of 1986.
The Athearn Genesis SD50 fills a void for the modeler of the 1980s and 1990s and is a direct response to the requests we have received over the
years. The model will feature Genesis-level detailing such as a detailed cab interior, truck side frames with animated Timken or static Hyatt bearings,
LED headlights, operating class-lights (where applicable), operating ditch lights (where applicable), operating number boards, operating ground lights, prototype specific antennas, horns, bells, and other road name-specific spotting features. The Athearn Genesis SD50 will also serve to fill the void between the Dash 2 models of the late 1970s and the modern microprocessor locomotives of the later 20th Century and beyond.

By the early 1970s, many first generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives. The most common replacement locomotive became the GP38-2. EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, non-turbocharged, 2000 horsepower engine in 1972. Unlike the GP38’s engine, which drove a generator to supply power to the traction motors, the GP38-2s prime mover drove an alternator which produced AC ...
Athearn July 2024 Announcement: Athearn Genesis ICC Caboose
Переглядів 79621 годину тому
Perhaps one of the most recognizable icons of American railroading, the caboose completed the train. Cabooses provided shelter for the rear end crew. From the cupola or bay windows, the crew could keep a lookout for shifting loads, damaged equipment, and overheating axles. As rail cars became larger in the late 1950s and early 1960s, there was a real need for cabooses to have greater visibility...
Athearn July 2024 Announcement: Athearn 62ft Tank Car
Переглядів 61521 годину тому
Tank cars are specialized pieces of equipment. Care is taken to ensure that tank contents are compatible with tank construction. As a result of this specialization, tank cars have generally been “one-way” cars. Other cars, like boxcars, can easily be reloaded with other goods for the return trip. Within the rail industry, tank cars are grouped by their type and not by the cargo carried. Please ...

A taxi is a type of vehicle for hire with a driver, used by a single passenger or small group of passengers, often for a non-shared ride. A taxicab conveys passengers between locations of their choice. This differs from public transport where the pick-up and drop-off locations are decided by the service provider, not by the customers, although demand responsive transport and share taxis provide...

It was the mid-1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s.The 50’ FMC cars...

Hopefully, these run better than the real SD50’s did! Lol
Desperately need WAMX GP38-2s and EIRR GP7Us
I've just pre-ordered 8564 and 8567. Let's do this!
What about Waycross Shops?
Still hoping for early seaboard system 8500s with the strobe lights and the nose headlight
Dang two of those CSX SD50s are on my list of locomotives to model. At least it will be a while before they actually are out.
the SD50 was the best thing to happen to G.E... I think the Chessie paint job was up there with the Santa Fe red & silver!
Wish Athearn would make CSX engines painted in the just grey scheme would not matter to me if it was Genesis or in the Athearn line. Plus wish you would bring back Dummy engines.
What year are you guys releasing the athearn genesis sd40-2 for connecticut southern
I'd like to see a Genesis GP35 or GP40 in the Chessie paint.
If I didn't already get the SD70 #5615 in Rio Grande paint that SD50 would be my pick, but that Chessie paint looks outstanding. Any word on those GP50? seems like it should have been out already but website shows the date been changed again. My SD70 NS #2548 needs its buddy. Bad enough I am still holding out for one of those GP15T in Rio Grande paint as well.
Just tuned in, Happy 4th, Happy Birthday America.
Very nice tonight Jim
Hello Jim
Cool.
Where's the updated CSX versions
Hello Jim
The Standard Chlorine of Delaware car is not prototypical for Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric Acid)
Looking forward to these cabooses. Been waiting ages for them!
Man, hadn't seen that model in a hot minute! I really like "The Hot Ones" car, that has to be my favorite of this bunch, and the irony is, I can't eat spicy food, lol!
Why no modern Norfork Southern units?
What kind of lighting packages? I hopw they have lighted number boards, walkway lights, inspection lights, lit control stands ect, like the other top scale mfg's!!!
Ha! I wouldn't count on that! Their average price is $70-80 more than Scaletrains' stuff, and usually have less features. I haven't bought anything new from Athearn in years, and with their current pricing, that trend will continue.
Wish the SP units were in the first run. Imagine the second run could take this into 2026. Guess the old RTR run will have to hang in there a little bit longer...
What about Seaboard System in gray and ConRail in blue with the extra long CR logo right before the ConRail Quality scheme ??
Awesome to have a descent SD50. It took long enough, Hopefully you do Rio Grand & SP Speed lettered with ditch lights as I model mid 90s to 2007ish . How about a prime for grime black with faint speed letter SP as in when they were used in helper service California
Yessssss
Hope this opens the door for modernized variants (SD50Ms, SD50-2s and SD40Es) in the future.
All of those Tank Cars look great there
I want to request an AC-9 in HO
Are athearn genesis sd50 genesis 2.0
CNW bought these orginally for powder river coal service... but they took a crap in the coal fields, bombed out bigtime... that's when the CNW went and bought some GE C40-8s... the C40s performed MUCH better
Guess that I am getting the Atlas GP38-2 to go with my Trainman GP39-2 instead of the athearn genesis one as it's not in the Genesis line.
Any chance yall will do a norfolk southern sd40e rebuild?
I like the CSX ones. They look very good.
I wish you guys would also bring sd40-2 for connecticut southern in genesis line
We desperately need another run of RCL/non-RCL Union Pacific GP38-2s 2000+ era. The last run is impossible to find
Fact
Thanks for the MoPac SD50s
Athearn needs better Customer service.
Averaging one month to get a reply via email to ask a question and another month to get issue resolved. What happens if their product needs warranty work? How long is that going to take?
Was hoping for some Lehigh Valley units in their beautiful Cornell red scheme.
ピクルス用貨車?! そんなのあったの
Yes, they were very real cars (or "wagons", depending on terminology)!
いいやん
So glad you are offering the Chessie System SD50 in an upgraded Genesis model. How about doing the same for the SD35 units in CNJ colors?
Just what I need to go with your new KCS SD50 models, keep bring those 1980s model railroad equipment.
The paint scheme that most appeals to me is the Particular Pickles Inc. one, since that firm was in Pittsburgh, PA. I very much doubt that metal vats were often or perhaps ever used on such cars because the brine would tend to corrode them. The Athearn cars of this type I have have simulated wooden vats.
A bit sad no „real“ UP or NS Version. Hopefully the next run will have some. But all in all awesome looking models.
They could only do so much in a single run. CR and SBD guys will probably get their moment too
@@CentralJerseyRailfan I don’t complain. I know they will make more runs. I’m just a UP/NS modeller so I wished for these
@@TobiasL1000 I’m a modern era CSX guy and honestly the 80s and 90s crowd deserve their moment. I would do my own ditch light install if I wanted to
Plus, think of the potential of this model! Rebuilds, second hand owners, ditch light era versions, fantasy schemes, the possibilities are virtually endless with this model! Also, keep in mind, the last time an Athearn SD50 was offered in HO scale, they were RTR models, so the fact a Genesis version is now in the works is big!
@@randallellison6421 im super happy with the model. I didn’t want to complain. I just said that I am a bit sad, that there is no NS. But I can appreciate the model and hope that many many railroaders buy them.
Though not mentioned, these are probably based on vehicles built by Checker.
🤫
I have an Athearn White House tank car for apple cider vinegar in the same livery from an earlier run. The firm was a major producer in Virginia. I think at least some of the other paint schemes are also ones done earlier.
Finally something new in Genesis. I wish you guys would also bring SD40-2 in Genesis.
That would be a hit.
And that's why I bought my SD40-2 ScaleTrains
GREAT COMMENT!!!!!... genesis SD40-2s would FLY off the shelf
Sd40-3 as well
God it’s endless but yes.
Definitely getting those BN fuel Tenders!
All of the locomotives that you showed looked great but I miss when you could purchase a plain Jane undecorated model without any livery or letting and then paint it to what ever road you wanted. I have failed in love with some SD70ace-BB, Dash 9 40-BB and ES43ace-BB locomotives unfortunately I know that you only sell the American version of these locomotives and not an undecorated kit with interchangeable plug and play trucks where one could build up the locomotive swapping out the H0 co trucks for H0n3.5 (12mm) two sets of bo-bo articulated trucks which would cover cover most of various of the same locomotive used by railroads worldwide like those meter gauge in Brazil.
Looking at that MT-4, what shade of green is that?
